I hope you are having a wonderful Saturday so far and enjoying the second weekend of August! Can you believe it? We are already only a few more weeks away from school, Fall, and all of the things that I love! I am so excited for it all.
Today my excitement for school is self-evident. I put together a list of the best apps for homeschool Moms like a lot of you that can help enrich your day! If you aren't a homeschool Mom, several of these are geared toward productivity no matter what you're doing.
TOP 10 APPS FOR A HOMESCHOOL MOM
I have an admission to make... I am obsessed with list making and fabulous calendars! As a Mom, homeschooling or otherwise, I can have a lot going at once with school, chores, blog work, crafting, and whatever else I can cook up. So when I discovered a calendar that allowed me to have separate to-do lists for each category, I lost it! Running a home can be complicated, can I get an amen?! And the best part about this wonderful app? It's made for both Apple AND Android! Don't let the price deter you.. it's worth it.
The only thing better than being able to be more productive? Doing it for FREE of course! No matter what calendar and to-do list you're using, this app is the perfect compliment. Taking the time to organize and carefully arrange your day is an art, but if you're anything like me you can get distracted. That's where 30/30 comes in! It allows you to create and time your routine to help you stay on task! For example, my morning routine includes bible study, email, and exercise. This app would allow you to give yourself a set amount of time to complete your tasks with a gentle reminder! The only draw back is that, for now, it is only available for Apple users.
Right along with organizing and planning your day comes managing your money! At our house, my husband trusts me to monitor the budget and keep him aware and at peace with our finances. One way that I succeed in doing that is by monitoring all of my accounts in one place! In addition to being able to easily view them all, the app encourages making goals like getting out of debt and keeps track of your success! This app is also available for Apple and Android.
If you are a reader and haven't ever heard of this app, your life is about to change! At first glance I thought it was something I had to have a subscription for, but I was wrong. Essentially, most libraries across the nation now have a digital library. So if you have a library card, you can use that account to sync to your local library and let the fun begin! Just as you would check out a book in person, this app allows you to check a book out and download it to your OVERDRIVE app to read until it expires and returns itself! It can't get much easier than that. Available for Apple and Android
If this one makes you a little uncomfortable, I totally understand. This site and app can certainly have unsavory materials, which is why I would NEVER allow my kids to watch this without supervision. Bad stuff aside, however, and you can't deny that this contains some really awesome information! Whether it is clips from a favorite show or a fun and informative video on science experiments, the potential for this is limitless. Personally we have used this to learn about Swan Lake (the ballet), the importance of physical fitness, and of course funny cat videos. Available for Apple and Android
Minecraft, if you haven't noticed, has become quite a fad. But don't let the fact that this is a game turn you off! The best way, in my opinion, that this has been described is as the ultimate sandbox game. Using creativity, science, engineering, and reasoning you can either build anything in creative mode or live a fruitful life in survival mode. This could be appropriate for little people (using peaceful mode) or for those seeking a non-violent thrill. This game is so complex that it takes time to understand, but there is value in using a game to teach things like peacefully working toward a goal (in a restricted time frame of course). Available for Apple and Android.
I love this app! As an artist, it would be wrong if I didn't have at least 1 sketching app (I actually have 4 but this is my favorite). Don't worry, you don't need to be an artist to appreciate this app. While my kids love having an easy place to doodle at the Doctor's office, I use this for projects! Quick sketches plus a color mixer that allows me to create whatever color I want makes it possible to test out different combinations for things like patterns and decorating. Available for Apple and Android.
This one, I'm sorry to say, is only for Apple users but I HAD to include it. My oldest struggles with letters and reading the most, and as a student who usually gets it right he simply wanted to give up every time! This app was a huge life-saver. In addition to helping him learn to write the letters properly, it also sounded out and helped him learn to spell words that our family used frequently! Once again we aren't into relying too heavily on electronics, but this app was a terrific tool!
For students that are a bit older (and you as well) the Strong's Concordance is always a great thing to have on hand! For those who aren't familiar, this is one of the most well known (KJV) bible study tools out there. This book makes it easy to search for individual words, topics, and more to help enhance your time with God! This is one of my favorite ways to do word studies on verses that are meaningful to me. Available for Apple and Android.
Perhaps it is simply the writer within me, but I can't deny the value in a good dictionary/thesaurus combination! In addition to teaching us about new words, having dictionaries on hand improves our bible study, and research papers. And the thesaurus? That book and I have a longstanding affair of appreciation. Available for Apple and Android.
And there you have it! As a homeschool Mom (and homemaker in general) these are the apps that I use the most!
